There is nothing wrong in using Chinese parts, even iPhone and iPad are manufactured in china by a Chinese company foxcon . Apple products too have china made parts. There is a huge gap between the quality of parts used in Indian brands and in global brands. comScore also said in its recent reports that most of budget android smartphone offered by Indian manufacturers are sub standard.

If you looking to buy a basic phone then you can go ahead with local brands, but if you are thinking to buy an Android Smartphone then I would suggest you to go with only the popular global brands. Here are my reasons why you should avoid brands like Micromax, Spice, Karbonn, Lava etc.

Low quality parts

Most of the Indian cell phone manufacturers use Chinese parts that are build with low quality material. As far as I know there are no cell phone parts manufacturing units in India, there are only parts assembling units. Because of low quality parts these phones are always highly vulnerable to dust, water and minor falls on the floors. The high end smartphones are IP55 and IP67 certified, they are dust and water resistant. The local brand phones are not that much resistant to dust and water.

Also Read: Common Smartphone Problems that you can fix yourself

Single Core Processors

Now almost every high end smartphone manufacturers are using dual core processors in their phones, many are even using quad core processors with dedicated GPU. While most of the low end manufactures are still having only single core processors with limited RAM in the phones. The latest android OS requires high processing capacity and many apps runs only on multiple core processors. Local brands disappoints in terms of processing power.

No over the air android updates

When the latest version of Android gets released most of the high end smartphone makers provides over the air update, that lets you update the android operating system via internet. None of the Indian android smartphone makers provides such over the air update. The reason of this is that their phones doesn’t have the required processing capacity.

Don’t Miss: Cheap dual camera android phones for video calls

Poor Quality touch screens

Budget android phones uses poor quality touch screen which is of low resolution. Such screens suffer from responsive problems. Their responsiveness keeps on reducing with usage. Dead pixels is another common problem of such low-quality Smartphones.

Poor after sales service and support

Local smartphone brands have their service centers in limited cities and towns. Also their after sales service is poor. They take very long time to fix your phone and even after it is fixed, the same problem appears again repeatedly. Many times they charge for repairs even when the phone is in warranty period, saying those things are not covered in warranty.

My experience with local phone brands

I have used two micromax X294 and micromax Q5 fb. Both these phone have made me to suffer a lot. The q5′s track balls hardly works for 2 months. It has to get replaced regularly. Micromax service center charged me 250 Rs for the ball replacement, saying track ball in not covered in the warranty. X294 battery stopped charging after 20 days of purchase. The service center people said its IC has burned and burning is considered a physical damage which is not covered in warranty. Two months after the repair the phone again became dead. This time the service center said there is problem with the motherboard. They took 20 days to repair the motherboard. Also one my friend who bought micromax A90 superfone had similar problem. First its touch screen stopped working and then after the repair it had problem with the motherboard

You can check the user reviews of micromax , karbonn, spice etc on sites like flipkart and mouthshout. You will find many users have complaints with such brands. If you are thinking to buy an android smartphone my advice to you is to go with the global brands. You can get cost effective smartphones from Samsung, sony etc in under 10k. Its better to spend little extra to enjoy a hassle free smartphone experience.

The Apple iPhone 5 was released recently amid much fanfare and is being touted by critics as one of the brands best handset yet. Its having some glitches one of them is the iPhone 5 screen freeze glitch. The IPhone 5 is a sleeker and powerful device when compared to its predecessors. The design of the phone is such that it is thinner than its predecessors and made entirely of aluminum and glass. The core of the device is faster than its previous versions. The battery is also a great piece of technology with the iPhone 5 being able to last a marathon 7 hours and 13 minutes when put under stringent tests. This result is better when compared to several of its competitors such as the HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Nexus 7. The camera is a great improvement despite the 8 MP tag. The camera processor ensures you get images with sharper pictures and better contrast. Even the video recording is a vast improvement when compared to its predecessors. The iPhone 5 comes with 4G LTE support. Even though only few providers have announced 4G support, Apple clearly considers 4G as an important part in the scheme of things.

Don’t Miss: How to get more free space on iPhone iPad and iPod

Amidst all these features, the last thing expected was a glitch. It was found by several iOS app developers that with longer periods of usage, the performance starts to slow down a bit and finally the screen freezes. This came right behind the iOS 6 Maps fiasco that led to the CEO giving a public apology and asking users to use other map software. Another issue was that when the touch screen was scrolled diagonally it causes an issue of screen freezing. The screen was not able to handle fast diagonal swipes and was found to stop
accepting input and freeze.

Don’t Miss: 7 Best health and fitness apps for iPhone and iPad

These issues do not matter much during daily use, however it affects mobile gamers. With the iPhone 5 encouraging developers to bring out better looking games, this glitch can act as a big deterrent. Apple enthusiasts are hoping that this is a software glitch and will get solved in the next update. While some analysts feel that this is a result of Apple trying to avoid the usage of components manufactured by Samsung. The components manufactured by Samsung are considered to be of high quality. In case you do experience this glitch at some point of time the solution that is usually advised is to do a “hard reboot”. You can also restore the device to its factory settings. However, that may lead to the loss of data in your iPhone.

Here are the instructions on how you can perform the hard reboot.

STEP 1- Press and hold down on the SLEEP button on your IPhone 5, it should be on the top side.

STEP 2- Press and hold down the HOME button (circular button on the face of your IPhone 5)

STEP 3- Continue to hold these two buttons, your screen will go blank and the Apple logo will appear. Now, you can release the buttons and your normal home screen will appear and the phone is ready for use again.

At the end of the day, if none of this works, you can always take your device to the Apple Store wherein the store personnel might help. But, do make sure that you go to an AASP or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Year 2012 has been the year of innovation for the Smartphone industry. This year Android surpassed Apple’s iOS to became the number one smartphone platform. Lots of Smartphone came this year with cool features and attractive prices. The popular brands were Samsung Galaxy, Apple iPhone , Sony Xperia and HTC. All these popular brands are not in the reach of everyone’s budget.

Problems can occur anytime with your smartphones. But not all such problems are serious and you don’t always need to take your phone to the service center. Most of problems are very common and can be fixed easily. Here are such common smartphone problems that you can fix yourself.

1. Phone Gets Wet

This is a very common accident that happens with many people. If your phone gets wet or gets dropped in water, you need to act immediately to avoid serious damage to your smart-phone. As soon as handset gets wet, immediately remove your phone’s battery and dry it off with a clean towel. To make it completely dry, you can try any of these things.

Bury your phone and the battery in a bowl full of rice.

Place it on the back of your PC monitor or TV screen over the heat vents.

Place it infron to air conditioner or fan.

I don’t suggest using hair dryer as it can blow in the water droplets into deeper areas of your phone. Don’t use the phone for few hours after it has dried. Most probably it will start working again.

2. Camera not working

Your phone’s camera may not work or it may not record videos. This can be a software or hardware problem. Reset your phone and make sure the OS is up to date. Rebooting and updating your OS may fix the problem and your camera might start functioning again.

3. Phone not charging

When your smartphone is not charging or its not recognizing the charger, then probably the phones port might me dirty. Cleaning the port will fix this problem in most of the cases. If the charger is loose in the port then you need to replace the charger.

4. Scratches on the screen

To prevent scratches on your phone’s screen always use a screen guard. Toothpaste can help you clean the scratches from the screen. Just put any non gel toothpaste on the screen and gently rub it in circular motion with a soft cloth or cotton and then wipe the whole thing with a soft and slightly damp cloth.

5. Battery draining quickly

Many apps run in the background, you can save lot of battery power by disabling such apps. You can use any task manager app for knowing which apps are running in the background. You can also save power by turning off screen’s auto-rotate function, Bluetooth, reducing the screen brightness and GPS. If you have internet pack activated and not really bothered about using the Wi-Fi, you can switch off the Wi-Fi as well.

Most of the smartphones use lithium ion batteries that get exhausted because of the heat generated during their use. Keeping them in cold environment not only extends their life but also increases their power. You can try keeping it in the refrigerator. But make sure that the batteries are wrapped in a poly bag or a zip lock bag while they are inside the refrigerator.

6. Phone shuts off randomly

This problem occurs when the battery is loose. You can fix it with a bit of paper. Open the back cover of your phone and insert the folded bit of paper between the edge of the battery and the edge of the phone, on the opposite side where the terminals of the battery are located. This will keep the battery firmly in place and stop your phone from shutting down.

7. Phone hangs frequently

This smartphone problem is generally caused by the apps. If your phone hangs pull the battery slowly from the phone. Once your phone restarts, you can go to Google Play > My Apps and then click on the app to update it. In case an update is not available then simply uninstall the app and then reinstall it.
